I laud the government's performance in mitigating COVID-19, since it was achieved in a time frame of less than two months.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR RI) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has praised the government's efforts to mitigate COVID-19, which have led to the number of active cases in Indonesia dipping below one percent in the last week.

"I laud the government's performance in mitigating COVID-19, since it was achieved in a time frame of less than two months," Soesatyo said in a written statement released here on Wednesday.

However, the MPR expects that the government will not let its guard down and be satisfied with the achievement, he added.

"Precautionary measures should still be conducted so that a spike or a third wave of COVID-19 cases would not happen," he advised.

He urged regional governments that still have a high number of active COVID-19 cases to improve prevention efforts through tracing, testing, and raising the quality of treatment.

"They should also expedite the vaccination program and encourage the public to comply with the health protocols while carrying out every activity," he said.

Regional governments should also monitor the development of COVID-19 case data and numbers in their respective regions, including on active cases, recovery rate, death cases to even bed occupancy rate (BOR) in hospitals, he added.

"If there is less-than-pleasant COVID-19 cases or data, then continue to coordinate with related regional institutions or the central government," Soesatyo advised.

Regional governments should also make their best effort for mitigating COVID-19 in their respective regions, especially in maintaining relaxations that have been expanded to various sectors, he said.

Earlier, COVID-19 Handling Task Force spokesperson Prof. Wiku Adisasmito had said that Indonesia has consistently recorded a reduction in positive cases for 11 weeks after a second spike in cases in July 2021.
