Palembang, South Sumatra (ANTARA) - A baby born with two heads died due to an abnormal lung condition at a hospital in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Friday (January 14, 2022), doctors treating the infant informed on Saturday.

The baby was born to a young couple, ER, 26, and AK, 24, Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital's public relations head, Ahmad Suhaimi, said.

"The doctor who took care of the baby has stated that the baby died at 11:20 a.m., three hours after its birth at 8:20 a.m.," he informed.

According to Suhaimi, the baby's mother was under intensive treatment in the midwifery room and her condition has improved.

The baby was born through cesarean section and had a bodyweight of 3.6 grams, length of 44 centimeters, and the circumference of both its heads was 33 cm, according to Dr. Indrayadi.

The baby had an abnormal lung condition, wherein each of its heads was supported by a single lung, and it also had congenital heart disease, he said.

When the baby was delivered, it did not cry immediately so the team of doctors provided oxygen assistance and took the baby to the newborn intensive care room, he informed.

"In the treatment room, the baby was not breathing again, then (doctors) connected a breathing tube to both heads of the baby (and attached the tube) to the respirator," he explained.

When breathing support was provided to the right head, only the right chest moved and the baby's breath was only heard on the right side, he said.

Meanwhile, when oxygen was given to the left head, only the left chest moved, so it was suspected that each of its heads was connected to only one lung, he added.

Finally, an X-ray showed two throats, two lungs, one heart, two vertebral columns (spines), two stomachs, one hip bone, two arms, and two legs, but there was no time for an echocardiography examination, he said.

"The baby's condition worsened even though it was given drugs for supporting heart pumping and the oxygen respirator had been maximized, but the situation was helpless. It died at 11:20 a.m.," Dr. Indrayadi added.
