"All television shows broadcast during the holy month of Ramadan must exhibit religious morals and a spirit that enlightens (viewers). (Television shows are expected to) inform those who do not know yet and make others who know get to know more," MUI's Information and Communications Commission head Mabroer said in a statement here on Thursday.
The commission head said that MUI has been monitoring television shows broadcast during the Ramadan period since 2005 and has sent letters of warning to broadcasters determined to have failed in broadcasting positive and enlightening messages.

Television channels that receive warning letters from MUI are expected to improve their television programs, while broadcasters that are assessed as successful in maintaining positive broadcasts will receive an award, he added.
"Television programs have received awards from MUI because they have broadcast religious values and messages during the Ramadan fasting period, and it is expected that they will be consistent in their positive performance in the following years," Mabroer remarked.
The commission head informed that the monitoring would be conducted by MUI's Information and Communications Commission, which will collaborate with the organization's Dawah Commission, Fatwa Commission, and other relevant commissions.

He then expressed the hope that the monitoring activity will bring positive effects to television broadcasting and said he expected others to participate in monitoring television shows that have become an agent of change in society.
"Television is an agent of change that has contributed to behavioral, thought, and civilization changes. It is essential to monitor television broadcasts together because if television broadcasts are not being monitored, we are afraid the medium will cause uncontrollable changes to our civilization," Mabroer said.
