Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) along with stakeholders agreed to form a national monitoring network to support the sustainable management of shorelines and small islands' ecosystem.

These stakeholders comprise the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Bogor Agricultural Institute, and Pattimura University.

The recommendation to form the national monitoring network had been formulated within the COREMAP-CTI Workshop Program and marked by the inking of a collective agreement draft here on Thursday.

At the event's press conference here on Thursday, BRIN's Oceanographic Research Center Head, Udhi Eko Hernawan, explained that the scope of monitoring or research conducted by the network encompasses coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangroves.

The national monitoring network will serve as a platform that involves several central institutions, regions, universities, and non-governmental organizations.

The national monitoring network determines the 2022-2024 roadmap that encompasses designing the formation of the national network institution finalization, monitoring creation of a grand design, bolstering shoreline ecosystem data coverage, and integration into one platform.

During the period, the national monitoring network will also conduct monitoring of the shoreline ecosystem, shoreline ecosystem research, bolstering capacity of human resources, draft formulation recommendation, and shoreline ecosystem conservation.

The network also needs to have a structure, with clearly defined roles, to facilitate coordination in terms of technical and administrative aspects.

The structure suggested for the national monitoring network involves Coordinator/Head handled by the ministry, Secretariat by the BRIN, and the Data and Information Based Working Group.

In addition, it involves the Shoreline Ecosystem Monitoring and Conservation Working Group, Research and Development Working Group, and Capacity Development Working Group.

Meanwhile a lecturer at the Bogor Agricultural Institute Beginer Subhan stated that in the early stage, the network will strengthen the national monitoring network system first that will involve several stakeholders.

The data is targeted to be integrated and be accessible by various stakeholders, including ministries, institutions, and the people, by 2025.
