At the meeting, which was held as part of the 7th Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR), she explained that the vital role lies in the parliamentary function of issuing regulations and ratifying the government's proposed budget.
"Parliaments have a unique position in disaster management as a catalyst for policy-making, including bridging the interests of various parties," she said in her speech at the plenary meeting at the Bali Nusa Dua Convention Center (BNDCC) here on Thursday.
Maharani affirmed that DPR and other parliaments that are members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) are committed to supporting disaster risk reduction efforts.
"As the president of the 144th IPU Assembly Session in Bali from March 20–24, 2022, I led the approval of the Nusa Dua Declaration as an effort to adapt to and mitigate climate change," she said.
The Nusa Dua Declaration has agreed on strengthening national actions to prevent the climate crisis, including envisaging a world without carbon emissions (net-zero emissions). The IPU, through the Nusa Dua Declaration, has agreed on the need for financial support of US$100 billion to support climate action in developing countries.
Nevertheless, she said, cooperation at the international level must be based on domestic policies.
