Jakarta (ANTARA) - The major clean-up of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) is not only an effort to enforce the law, but an opportunity to revamp the SOEs Ministry and all government-owned companies, Minister Erick Thohir has said.

“The major clean-up of SOEs, as the Attorney General stated earlier, is not only our effort to arrest (wrongdoers), but the most important is how we improve the existing system of state-owned enterprises and the ministry itself," he stated at the Attorney General's Office here Monday.

Efforts to improve the system to ensure long-term and continuous corruption prevention measures at state-owned enterprises are important, the minister added.

"The (important aspect of the) measure is not to arrest (wrongdoers), but (to ensure) that this measure can rescue, restructure, and become a viable solution for all of us," he said.

President Joko Widodo and the SOEs Ministry are committed to reforming state-owned insurance company PT Asuransi Jiwasraya (Persero), including by engaging in collaboration with the Attorney General's Office (AGO) and the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP), he added.

"We can now prove that the reform in Jiwasraya is near-thorough. Though it is not perfect, it is already on the right track," the minister affirmed.

Commenting on the ongoing restructuring of state-owned airline Garuda Indonesia, he said the authority needs to consider the voting results of creditors, which is part of the deferred debt payment obligation (PKPU) process.

"The voting target is only 61 percent, but because the process is wholly transparent and professional, the voting reaches 97 percent. This is an amazing achievement indeed," he remarked.

The successful reforms at state-owned enterprises have demonstrated that professional and transparent collaboration between government institutions could produce good outcomes that benefit all, the minister said.

"With humility, I and my teams highly appreciate the cooperation engaged with the AGO and the BPKP," Thohir added.
