Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) instructed the Indonesian Police (Polri) to conduct comprehensive investigation into a fatal shootout between two police officers that left one of them dead on July 8, 2022.

“I have ordered (them) to thoroughly investigate it. Disclose it as it is. Do not cover it up and be transparent. That is all,” the president stated on the sidelines of his working visit to Rinca Island, East Nusa Tenggara, on Thursday.

The president laid due emphasis on transparency to probe the shootout that left Brigadier Yoshua Hutabarat dead at the official residence of head of the National Police’s Internal Profession and Security Division Inspector General Ferdy Sambo in South Jakarta.

By being transparent, the public will not harbor doubts about the police force, the president stated.

“That must be maintained. The public confidence in Polri must be maintained,” he stressed.

With regard to the shootout, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo suspended Inspector General Ferdy Sambo, Chief of the National Police’s Internal Security Bureau Brigadier General Hendra Kurniawan, and Chief of the South Jakarta Metropolitan Police Senior Commissioner Budhi Herdy Susianto.

Chief of the National Police’s Public Relations Division Inspector General Dedi Prasetyo said the suspension of the high-ranking police officers is aimed at ensuring transparent, objective, and accountable investigation of the fatal shootout.
