Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Counter-Terrorism Agency (BNPT) Commissioner General Boy Rafli Amar highlighted Indonesia’s commitment to fulfilling the rights of victims of terrorism at the United Nations (UN) Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism 2022.

"The Indonesian government strives to fulfil the rights and needs of victims of terrorism by strengthening the legislative framework and providing compensation to the victims," he noted in a statement received here on Friday.

The congress is held at the UN Headquarters in New York, the United States, on September 8-9, 2022, to discuss the fulfilment and protection of the rights and needs of victims of terrorism.

In addition to Indonesian citizens, the Indonesian government also fulfils the rights of foreigners, who became victims of terrorism in the country.

"From 2002 to 2022, the government has provided compensation to more than 700 victims of terrorism," the BNPT head noted.

In addition, the BNPT and the Witness and Victim Protection Agency (LPSK) provide medical assistance as well as psychosocial and psychological rehabilitation to the victims.

The government’s commitment is also strengthened by several breakthroughs in BNPT's flagship programs, including the implementation of a reconciliation forum that brings together the survivors of various terrorism attacks and the former convicts of the crime.

Furthermore, the agency implements the National Integrated Area (KTN) Program that encourages collaboration in conducting deradicalization among local partners, survivors of the crime, and local communities.

Amar stated that the breakthroughs emphasize the government’s attempts to involve all parties in the recovery and fulfilment of the rights of terrorism survivors through a multi-stakeholder or pentahelix approach.

"The state is responsible for fulfilling the rights and needs of victims of terrorism. Improving their welfare will help them to recover," he added.
