We prepare several options that will be delivered to the President.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Communication and Informatics Ministry is reviewing the formation of an institution that will monitor the implementation of the personal data protection regulation.

"It is expected to be completed within six months,” Director General of Informatics Application at the ministry, Semuel Abrijani Pangerapan, said during the dissemination of the Personal Data Protection Law here on Thursday.

Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection or UU PDP mandates the existence of a personal data monitoring institution that is responsible to the President.

A joint team comprising experts from the ministry, Gadjah Mada University, and Padjadjaran University is currently formulating an urgency draft that will be submitted to President Joko Widodo.

Acting Director of Informatics Application Management at the ministry, Teguh Arifiyadi, said that the urgency draft will be a consideration for the President to decide on the formation of the personal data protection monitoring institution.

"We will prepare several options that will be delivered to the President," he informed.

The discussion on the urgency draft is estimated to proceed for six months at the latest.

After the draft is given to President Widodo, he will decide who will be given the authority to monitor personal data protection.

The authority could come in the form of a new institution or a ministry or institution appointed to supervise personal data protection.

The Personal Data Protection Law was signed by President Widodo on October 17, 2022. The regulation was created to protect personal data and maintain the sovereignty of Indonesia's digital space.

The law defines personal data and lays down criminal and administrative sanctions for violators of personal data rights.

On October 20, Communication and Information Minister Johnny G. Plate said that the government is preparing a presidential regulation and other derivative regulations of the UU PDP.
