Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Film Board (BPI) has urged the government to create a national film master plan (RIPN), as mandated by Law No.33 of 2009 concerning Film.

"The RIPN will serve as a guide for all parties, stakeholders, and policymakers on what must be done to develop the film (industry) from the center to the regions," BPI chairperson Gunawan Paggaru said here on Wednesday.

Article 52 of Law No.33/2009 tasks the government with drafting, determining, and coordinating the implementation of national film policies and the master plan by paying attention to inputs from the BPI.

Then, Article 55 states that local governments have a duty to implement national film policies and the master plan.

According to Paggaru, there is no RIPN yet, but it can serve as a "compass" or a direction tool for the film industry, covering details of long-term plans for the next few years.

In addition, BPI also called for changes or revisions to, or even the replacement of, Law No.33 of 2009. Paggaru said he sees it as less harmonious with other related regulations such as laws covering the creative economy and regions' autonomy.

"The regulations have a 'tug-of-war' against each other, making our industry very difficult to progress," he explained.

For this year's National Film Day, which falls on Thursday (March 30), BPI has organized a series of conferences to bring together various stakeholders and discuss problems that need to be resolved in the national film industry.

On Thursday, Paggaru said that the BPI will hand over a book summarizing the results of the conference series to policymakers.

Indonesia's film industry has been improving, judging by the number of films and viewers to the diversity of films produced both at the regional and central level, he added.

Seeing this potential, policies that can strengthen the national film ecosystem are needed, he said.
