Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN), during a ceremony on its 77th anniversary, affirmed that it will strengthen its commitment to safeguarding national cyberspace with the public.

"BSSN invites all parties, ranging from state administrators, business actors, academics, and the society at various levels to take part in collaboration with BSSN in protecting the cyberspace to ensure national security and boost national economic development," BSSN head, Lieutenant General (retd.) Hinsa Siburian, said at the agency's 77th anniversary event in Depok, West Java, on Tuesday.

In his speech, Siburian traced the agency's long history that began with the establishment of a cyber unit called The Code Office under the supervision of the Ministry of Defence in 1946.

Three years after its establishment, The Code Office was renamed Djawatan Sandi (lit. Code Service) following its work enabling Indonesia to connect with other representatives overseas during Operation Crow, which is widely known in Indonesia as the Dutch Military Aggression II.

The agency was once again rechristened in 1972 to State Signal Agency (Lemsaneg). As Lemsaneg, the agency's primary function was to coordinate, regulate, and administer closed and classified cipher relations between state apparatus at the central, regional, and international levels.

After more than half a century, the government decided to transform Lemsaneg by merging it with the Directorate of Information Security of the Communication and Information Ministry and the Indonesia Security Incident Response Team on Internet Infrastructure (ID-SIRTII) in 2017.

The agency has been operating under the name of BSSN since then.

"The long history, along with the struggle values it embodied has become the seed of the formation of BSSN that should not be forgotten. We, as successors, are obliged to preserve the values to succeed the struggles of our predecessors in serving this beloved country," Siburian said.

In addition, BSSN affirmed that it is currently proposing that its founding father Dr. Roebiono be named as a national hero for his efforts to form the agency.

The ceremony on Tuesday, which was themed “Together With BSSN, We Protect Cyberspace,” was attended by BSSN structural officials, employees, and cadets of the State Cyber and Crypto Polytechnic.
