Jakarta (ANTARA) - People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Speaker Bambang Soesatyo has asked the government to monitor Indonesian nationals affected by the riots that have raged in France since June 29, 2023, through the Indonesian Embassy in Paris.

Soesatyo has also asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to update data on Indonesian nationals in France to allow the monitoring of their whereabouts and ensure their security in the midst of the ongoing riots.

"We would like to ask the government to continue monitoring and getting updated information through the official channel of the French government," he said in a written statement received here on Monday.

He appealed to citizens to immediately contact the ministry's Indonesian citizen protection number in case of an emergency situation.

He also appealed to the embassy in Paris to continue to guide Indonesian citizens in the European country to stay vigilant and avoid demonstration spots as well as locations prone to rioting.

He urged the Indonesian government to maintain communication with local French government representatives to ensure that all Indonesian nationals are safe and sound.

"We would also like to suggest the government to consider executing evacuation efforts in the event of a prolonged and worsening situation that may pose a threat to the security and safety of our citizens," he said.

In his statement, he also expressed the hope that the French government will put an immediate end to the riots that have been raging for several days, thus restoring the security and conduciveness in the country.

Riots broke out across France on June 29 following the shooting of a 17-year-old by a police officer. The unrest spilled over to other places in central Paris, resulting in the burning of 2,500 buildings and 1,350 vehicles as well as acts of looting.
