"Despite their limitations, people with disabilities do not give up and have proven themselves capable of managing businesses," he said during an online discussion with the theme "Independent People With Disabilities," which was accessed from Jakarta.
Uno affirmed that the government has consistently supported equality for people with disabilities, in accordance with Law Number 8 of 2016 on People with Disabilities. This law prescribes providing equal rights and opportunities for people with disabilities so that they can live prosperous, independent lives free from discrimination.
He mentioned that his ministry will collaborate with people with disabilities who have special businesses or talents through its programs.
"For instance, people with disabilities working in the coffee industry, we will invite them to share their knowledge and experiences in tourism villages," he said.
He also stated that his ministry will assist graduates of special needs schools in developing their skills and expertise so that they can achieve economic independence.
The minister called for encouraging and creating opportunities for people with disabilities to continue innovating, adapting, and collaborating.
Uno and his team at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy are working to devise policies that support people with disabilities, not only in terms of physical access but also job opportunities.
He expressed hope that, in addition to the government, more companies will recruit and empower people with disabilities, emphasizing that they have the same rights as everyone else and should be supported in participating in tourism activities.
Uno urged managers of tourist destinations to increase awareness and prepare all aspects to make tourist destinations more disability-friendly, including attractions, amenities, and accessibility.
"Hopefully, we can create 4.4 million new jobs by 2024 and provide equality for our amazing friends, people with disabilities," he remarked.
