Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Communication and Informatics Budi Arie Setiadi has asked the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) to support the government in eradicating online gambling through concrete action.

He asked the association to participate in eradicating negative content related to online gambling.

"I ask for full support from all members of APJII to make all forms of concrete efforts to prevent and stop the spread of negative content on the internet, especially online gambling and slot gambling," he said in Surakarta, Central Java, on Tuesday.

He made the statement while speaking at the 2023 APJII National Working Meeting.

The minister said that, during his term, the eradication of online gambling will be tackled as a serious issue to prevent more people from falling victim to it.

During the period from August 1 to September 23, 2023, the ministry has cut off access to 126,408 items of content related to online gambling, both from websites and social media.

The ministry is also participating in identifying bank accounts suspected of being affiliated with online gambling. At least 1,931 bank accounts have been identified as having the potential to be used for online gambling, and 201 of them have been blocked by the authorities.

Setiadi said that to accelerate efforts to eradicate online gambling, he will write to all internet service providers in Indonesia and ask them to help cut off access to online gambling content.

"No later than tomorrow, I will sign an official letter of request to seriously support the government's efforts in eradicating online gambling and slot gambling," he said.

He expressed the hope that the collaboration between the government and the industry would support the creation of a safe, comfortable, and productive digital space for Indonesians without disruption from online gambling.

This will also be in line with the digital governance regulation, which regulates the responsibilities of electronic system providers (PSEs) regarding activities in the digital space.

Based on the regulation, PSEs, which include digital platform organizers, as well as telecommunications networks and service providers, have a shared responsibility to provide services that do not support the circulation of negative content on the Internet.

"The synergy between the government and all relevant stakeholders, including APJII, with a sense of unity and care is key to advancing Indonesia's telecommunications sector," the minister said.
