In a statement, the ministry's Director General of Intellectual Property, Min Usihen, affirmed that Indonesia, as an ASEAN member, would support all programs agreed upon under the framework of the ASEAN Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Action Plan 2016-2025.
She made the statement in her opening remarks at the 71st ASEAN WGIPC Meeting.
Indonesia will also support the formulation of a post-2025 IPR action plan to anticipate the emergence of new technologies, she remarked.
"Indonesia has become a country champion in the implementation of copyright-related initiatives outlined in the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025," Usihen stated.
She also noted that Indonesia had been playing a prominent role in delivering action plans related to genetic resources, traditional knowledge, and traditional culture expressions, as evidenced by its experiences in protecting intellectual property rights amid cultural diversity in the country.
The Intellectual Property Directorate General on July 7 signed an agreement on cooperation in the establishment of an intellectual property training institution, called IP Academy, in Indonesia with the World Intellectual Property Organization, she stated.
She said that the government was optimistic that the IP Academy would facilitate the public and relevant stakeholders to gain information on intellectual property rights.
"Hence, stakeholders are expected to fully comprehend matters related to intellectual property, so they can optimize their intellectual property rights for businesses without infringing on those of other parties," she elaborated.
Usihen expressed hope that her ministry would be able to forge cooperation with the ASEAN IP Academy as well as ASEAN member countries that already established their own IP academies.
She also opined that efforts to disseminate information on intellectual property rights to young people are essential for supporting the growth of the creative economy.
The Indonesian government has conducted various relevant activities across the country, such as IP Goes to School and Mobile IP Clinic programs, with the objective of educating the people about matters related to intellectual property rights, she stated.
The ASEAN WGIPC Meeting is a forum routinely participated by representatives from intellectual property offices of ASEAN countries.
The activity serves as a forum for discussing various issues, including preparations for the next negotiations on the Upgraded IP Framework Agreement, the status for the implementation of the ASEAN IPR Action Plan 2016-2025, and the formulation of the next IPR action plan.
