The General Elections Commission (KPU) of Pangkajene Islands (Pangkep) District, South Sulawesi Province, is planning to use six ships to distribute logistics required for the 2024 general elections to the province's outermost islands.
"We will use a total of six ships for the distribution of election logistics, including ballot papers, to the islands of Tangaya and Kalmas. Three ships each will be deployed to the islands," Chairman of Pangkep KPU, Ichlas, remarked on Sunday.
The two islands are situated in South Sulawesi's outermost regions, namely Liukang Tangaya and Liukang Kalmas sub-districts that are parts of Pangkep District.
"The ships are ready. Next, KPU, port authorities, and other relevant institutions will check the ships to review their administrative permits, physical conditions, and feasibility," he pointed out.
Ichlas was then informed that the election logistics distribution to the two islands would begin on Monday (February 5) at 4:00 p.m. local time via the Maccini Baji People's Port, Labakkang Sub-district.
He added that two ships scheduled to set sail for Kalmas Island had already undergone inspections and are currently anchored on the bank of the Pangkajene River.
The official also said that his office had been coordinating with the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency’s (BMKG's) Paotere Maritime Meteorology Station in Makassar City to get updates on sea wave conditions.
He further noted that security apparatus from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and National Police (Polri) had conveyed their readiness to assist the KPU in distributing the election logistics.
According to data from Pangkep KPU, a total of 249,727 people from 13 sub-districts have been included in the fixed voter list for the 2024 general elections, with 14,038 and 10,353 of them residing in Liukang Tangaya and Liukang Kalmas sub-districts, respectively.
