"We work hand in hand, coordinating with the PUPR Ministry. Insya Allah (By God’s will), we can solve (flooding in Demak)," Sulaiman remarked in a written statement received here in Jakarta on Monday (Feb 12).
Sulaiman stated that his side will coordinate with the PUPR Ministry to repair a breached embankment in Demak, which had led to flooding in some of the region’s agricultural lands.
“We are coordinating with the PUPR Ministry to repair the embankment immediately. Hopefully, the embankment will be closed in five days,” he stated.
Minister Sulaiman, District Head of Demak Eisti'anah, and Central Java Regional Secretary Sumarno directly monitored the inundated agricultural lands.
During his monitoring duty, Minister Sulaiman delivered infrastructure aid, amounting to Rp30 billion (about US$1.91 million), to victims of flooding in three regions in Central Java. The aid comprised fertilizers, seeds, agriculture machinery, and other harvesting equipment that can accelerate production.
“In total, the aid amounts to Rp30 billion (about US$1.91 million), consisting of rice seeds for 10 thousand hectares, tertiary irrigation networks (JIT), Agricultural Insurance (AUTP), pumps, combine harvesters, and tractors for three districts,” the minister stated.
The aid will be distributed to farmers whose lands are flooded in the districts of Demak, Grobogan, and Kudus.
Meanwhile, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono targeted the repair of the breached Wulan River embankment in Demak, Central Java, to be completed in three days.
“The current progress in work has reached 20 percent of the length of the embankment breach, which is approximately 20 meters. There are five heavy equipment at the site,” he stated during a visit to the breached embankment in Ketanjung Village, Karanganyar Sub-district, Demak, on Monday.
As many as 12 pump units, with a capacity of five cubic meters per second, are provided as an effort to reduce the formation of water puddles.
“The water siphon pumps are operated for 12 hours to help the floodwaters to recede,” he remarked.
Heavy equipment used to repair the breached embankment in Wulan River are standard excavators, amphibious excavators, and long arm excavators.
The lengths of the breach along the embankment are 20 meters and 10 meters. Work has begun to repair the 20-meter breach, whereas the other one is awaiting repair.
