We have instructed them to help arrange all aspects from the funeral to the compensation ... There is also assistance from municipal authorities and the police who helped us in handling the funeral and other aspects.Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the General Election Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu), Rahmat Bagja, on Friday said that the agency has instructed the relevant officials to assist in the funeral preparations for electoral organizers who died on Election Day.
The instruction was issued after the agency received reports regarding the deaths of electoral organizers while managing polling stations during the general election on February 14, 2024, he informed.
"We have instructed them to help arrange all aspects from the funeral to the compensation ... There is also assistance from municipal authorities and the police who helped us in handling the funeral and other aspects," Bagja said at the Bawaslu head office here.
As per the Health Ministry's records, 27 electoral organizers have died on duty as of Friday afternoon, eight of them due to cardiac issues.
The deaths have been reported in several provinces, including Central Java, West Java, East Java, Banten, and Jakarta.
The agency head expressed his gratitude to all parties handling the funeral preparations for the electoral organizers and assisting their families.
Though the agency took steps to prevent election official deaths, such as requiring them to undergo health checks and submit proof of health records, other factors beyond Bawaslu's control may have caused the latest deaths, Bagja said.
"We have asked them to maintain their health, but we have no idea about conditions at that time. Perhaps a flood and rain occurred there," he explained.
More than 204 million Indonesian voters cast their ballot on February 14 to elect the president, the vice president, as well as members of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and regional legislatures (DPRD) at the provincial, city, and district levels.
Three candidate pairs are vying for national leadership in this year's election — Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar (pair number one); Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka (pair number two); and Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD (pair number three).
