Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), Bintang Puspayoga, has pushed for equitable and inclusive human development that embraces all elements of society, including people living with disabilities.
In a statement received from her office in Jakarta on Monday, the minister observed that high-quality human resources are vital for a country to become developed.
"Hence, to that end, we need to pave the way for equitable human development that can heed all societal elements, embracing men, women, elderly, children, and disabled persons," she stated.
She made the statement during a dialogue with athletes from the National Paralympic Committee of Indonesia (NPCI) in Denpasar city, Bali province, on February 16, 2024.
During the dialogue, Puspayoga affirmed the government's commitment to implementing inclusive and just programs for disabled persons as per Law No. 8 of 2016 concerning people with disabilities.
She told the athletes that the PPPA Ministry has been coordinating with the Ministry of Social Affairs to ensure the rights of disabled groups by evaluating their needs and providing the required assistance.
"The ministries have also been coordinating with regional governments to facilitate disabled athletes to exercise by providing access to available fields and fitness centers," she added.
Furthermore, Puspayoga emphasized the importance of athletes with disabilities becoming participants of healthcare and social security programs, stating her belief that the athletes are more susceptible to physical injuries.
She then expressed the hope for cross-sector collaboration at all levels to ensure the fulfillment of the rights of disabled athletes.
"We hope that organizations, municipal governments, and provincial governments will synergize and establish cross-sector collaboration to oversee the right fulfillment of athletes with disabilities," she added.
