Extreme weather experienced in the district of Malaka, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province, has triggered floods that affect a total of nine villages scattered across three sub-districts, the local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) stated.
"(The floods hit) three sub-districts, namely Central Malaka, West Malaka, and Weliman," Acting Head of Malaka BPBD Stefanus Nahak Klau stated when contacted from Kupang, NTT, on Tuesday.
Torrential rains lashing Malaka District on Sunday (March 10) have caused the Benenai River to overflow, sweeping residences located in nine villages in the three sub-districts.
Klau explained that the floods have been inundating nine villages, namely Naimana, Fahilika, and Lawalu in Central Malaka Sub-district; Sikun, Fafoe, Oan Mane, and Motaain in West Malaka Sub-district; and Forekmodok and Lamudur in Weliman Sub-district.
According to Klau, the disaster has also affected agricultural lands in addition to residential areas in the nine villages.

The official further noted that the BPBD and local governments had taken measures in response to the situation, including by distributing clean water to affected residents.
"The residents are in urgent need of clean water. We are currently recapitulating data on the impact of the floods," he pointed out.
Klau then underscored that the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had issued an early warning of extreme weather predicted to hit regions in NTT Province until March 14, 2024.
Bearing that in mind, he urged Malaka residents, especially those living in proximity to the Benenai River, to move their valuable items to safer places to anticipate unwanted events.
The BPBD head also appealed to locals to take anticipatory measures by cleaning up drainage and sewer channels to prevent mosquitoes from breeding and spreading dengue fever and diarrhea.
"Stay alert and keep paying attention to your health," he concluded while addressing Malaka residents.
