"According to data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) in 2023, the rate of child marriage in Wajo declined to 6.92 percent, down by 1.14 percentage points, from the 8.06 percent recorded in 2022," she noted in a statement received from her office here on Thursday.
Puspayoga made the statement during her visit to the Office of Wajo District Head on Tuesday (March 26).
The minister also underlined that Wajo's success in suppressing child marriage cases is also reflected in a significant decline in the number of cases of marriage dispensation involving children, from 694 in 2021 to only 77 in 2023.
She then emphasized that Wajo's success story is notable since child marriage is a multidimensional issue in nature, noting that two sub-districts in Wajo -- Sajoanging and Takkalalla -- recorded zero cases of child marriage last year.
"This feat is a result of the strong commitment and cooperation forged by various parties, including the regional government, religious figures, community figures, and community organizations," she pointed out.
Puspayoga expressed belief that all parties in Wajo District have exerted utmost efforts to respond to issues related to women and children, especially child marriage.
Child marriage prevention is essential, she emphasized, adding that marriage involving children could lead to health issues and increase the risk of physical and sexual domestic violence.
She then attributed the high rate of child marriage in Indonesia to several factors, such as poverty, geographical conditions, inadequate access to education, social conflicts, social norms, and cultures.
Solid commitment and cooperation are required to continue to suppress child marriage cases in Indonesia and allow the country's children to grow in safer and more suitable environments, she said.
