Cirebon, West Java (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi emphasized that contraflow and one-way schemes on toll roads are still needed to ensure a smooth Eid homecoming season.

During a press conference at Cirebon Station in West Java on Tuesday, he stated that those schemes are essential to support smooth flow on toll roads to prevent congestion.

He assured the public that before implementing these traffic engineering schemes, the police made thorough preparations to support people partaking in the Eid exodus to travel safely and smoothly.

Sumadi affirmed that with the implementation of those schemes, the traffic conditions remained under control, such as on the Cikopo-Palimanan (Cipali) toll road, which is a crucial point in the Trans Java Toll Roads.

“On Cipali, it ran well. We are currently thinking about how to make the return flow to be controlled well,” he stated.

He also said that the government, along with the National Police (Polri) Traffic Corps, is preparing mitigation measures regarding the safety of Eid travelers on toll roads.

Meanwhile, Director of Registration and Identification at Polri Traffic Corps Brigadier General Yusri Yunus spoke at length about special terms and conditions for implementing traffic engineering on toll roads, including contraflow.

He cited as an example that for implementing contraflow in one lane, the condition is that the number of vehicles passing must be at around 4,400 units per hour.

“Then, it will be implemented in two lanes if there is an increase to 4,600 vehicles passing per hour. For three lanes, there must be six thousand vehicles passing per hour, and for four lanes, the vehicles passing must reach 7,800,” Yunus explained.

He stated that toll roads, especially the Trans Java, were popular routes among people during the homecoming season. Hence, the Polri Traffic Corps is currently developing a policy to reduce the number of accidents.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, 193.6 million people are estimated to travel during the season to celebrate the upcoming Eid, which is expected to fall on April 10.
