"The number of newcomers to Jakarta is predicted to decrease after the 2024 Eid, around 10 thousand to 15 thousand people," Disdukcapil head, Budi Awaludin, stated on Saturday.
According to Awaludin, one of the reasons for the decrease in the number of newcomers to DKI Jakarta was due to equitable development, including of infrastructure, in several regions.
Moreover, the national economy has improved along with the distribution of employment opportunities, with myriad choices currently available across the country, Awaludin added.
He then outlined the trend in the number of newcomers after Eid homecoming during the last four years, with 24,043 people recorded in 2020, some 20,046 people in 2021, around 27,478 people in 2022, and 25,918 people in 2023.
The DKI Provincial Government continues to appeal to Jakarta residents currently celebrating the 2024 Eid al-Fitr in their hometowns to not bring along their relatives while returning later without guarantee of a decent place to live and work.
Earlier, DKI Jakarta Regional Secretary, Joko Agus Setyono, also reminded homecomers to not bring along their relatives having inadequate skills from their hometown to Jakarta.
"I remind all homecomers, when they return to Jakarta, do not bring your relatives or neighbors from your hometown to try their luck in Jakarta without having adequate work skills and preparation," he stated on April 4.
He highlighted that migrant communities who come to Jakarta are at risk of encountering various difficulties if they possess inadequate work skills and preparation since access to work there was not easy.
"Consider the risks they will face, such as difficulties in fulfilling administrative requirements for occupation, access to work, and finding a suitable and permanent place to live," Setyono remarked.
