Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is improving the contraflow or opposite-direction traffic engineering scheme by increasing the distance between barriers and installing safety shields.

Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, Muhadjir Effendy, made the remarks after attending a coordination meeting at the Vice President's official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday.

"Results of the evaluation of contraflow have been followed up immediately. The barrier is being tightened, initially only 13 meters, now it has been tightened to around 8 meters," he informed.

In addition, traffic operators have also put shields on the sides of lanes to prevent vehicles from leaving the opposite direction, he added.

"Then we will build a kind of barrier if a vehicle moves into the opposite lane, there will be several barriers," he continued.

Effendy informed that another improvement made to the contraflow system based on the 2024 Eid homecoming has been to alert safety cars at contraflow points to immediately evacuate if an accident happens.

He informed that fire trucks are among the safety cars placed at several points in opposite directions.

His ministry, as the party responsible for organizing the 2024 Eid homecoming, said that improvements to the contraflow system have been carried out based on the results of an evaluation of the dynamics of the homecoming traffic in the field.

The government has decided to improve the contraflow management system due to several accidents during homecoming, including a crash during contraflow at KM58 of the Jakarta-Cikampek toll road on April 8, which involved three vehicles — a Gran Max minivan, a Primajasa bus, and a Daihatsu Terios car. The Gran Max and Terios were burnt in the accident.

All 12 passengers on board the Gran Max — seven men and five women — were killed.

In another mishap, a Rosalia Indah bus accident met with an accident on KM370A of the Semarang-Batang toll road on April 11. The accident claimed the lives of seven passengers.
