Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) encouraged all parties to foster the spirit to contribute to the advancement of national education in every initiative.

The president's remarks were conveyed on the occasion of National Education Day on May 2 through his official Instagram account @jokowi.

"I hope the spirit to advance our education continues to live in every initiative and technology that we develop," Jokowi stated on Thursday.

The president remarked that education continued to develop from the Independence period to the current times and should be adaptive to future changes.

The president also conveyed his National Education Day greetings to all Indonesian people.

"Happy National Education Day," Jokowi remarked.

Indonesia's National Education Day is commemorated every May 2 to honor national hero and the first education minister Ki Hadjar Dewantara, considered by many as the father of Indonesia's education. National Education Day falls on his birthday.

Dewantara also coined the current motto of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, "Tut Wuri Handayani," meaning those on behind, encourages, which encapsulated his vision that teachers should motivate their pupils in their quest for knowledge.

Meanwhile, Education, Culture, Research, and Technology Minister Nadiem Makarim stated that one of the ministry's innovations, the Merdeka Belajar (Independent Learning) program, aims to transform and help develop Indonesia's education.

"Leading the Merdeka Belajar program made us realize challenges and opportunities we have to advance national education," Makarim stated at the National Education Day commemoration ceremony on Thursday.

He stated that the ministry faced various challenges in its efforts to thoroughly transform national education in the last five years, as it requires the commitment of stakeholders to reform their perspectives on the teaching and learning process at schools.
