Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said his side is committed to expediting improvements at the Schools of Shipping and Science (STIP) to break the chain of violence between students.

"We deeply regret the violent incident that happened in STIP Jakarta. It brings deep sorrow and has become a point that we had to make a change. We will improve vocational education under the auspices of the Ministry of Transportation," he stated here on Thursday.

On the occasion, he visited the family of Putu Satria Ananta Rustika in Klungkung, Bali, who died in a violent incident.

The minister expressed his deep condolences as well as regret and apology to Rustika's family for the violent incident that turned out to be fatal.

In the short term, he affirmed that the Transportation Ministry will implement a temporary halt on student admissions at STIP Jakarta and optimize admissions at other shipping schools under the ministry.

"In addition, we will prohibit activities that can lead to loopholes in bullying, such as by eliminating the attributes of seniors and junior ranks in schools," he remarked.

Moreover, in the medium term, his side will maximize digital-based reports that reduce face-to-face interactions and improve the quality of student mentors as well as reduce interactions between different levels of students and remove uniform attributes.

He said that the improvements will also be carried out in other schools under the ministry's auspices.

"In the long term, similar improvements will be implemented in other schools under the Ministry of Transportation," he explained.

Sumadi stated that his side is committed to making schools under the Transportation Ministry as education institutions that produce quality transportation human resources, both in terms of skills and those who are virtuous and have morality.
