Jakarta (ANTARA) - Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Laksana Tri Handoko said he wants new researchers to contribute to improving Indonesia's economy, living standards, and the welfare of the nation.

"The way to advance national welfare is to increase the added value or economic value of products," he noted in the agency's statement received here on Monday.

Citing an example, Handoko stated that in order to increase the economic value of corn, the commodity needs to be processed into other products of higher value, such as medicine.

Hence, he underscored the need for research to support the generation of added value for products.

"This is a challenge in research to increase the added value of products," he remarked.

BRIN is holding basic training for BRIN pre-civil servants from May 27 to June 5, 2024.

The training is held with the theme of "Strengthening the Competence of BRIN Researchers with the values of Service Oriented, Accountable, Competent, Harmonious, Loyal, Adaptive and Collaborative (AKHLAK) for the Advancement of Indonesian Innovation and Research."

The activity, with attendees comprising new BRIN researchers, is taking place in Depok, West Java.

Handoko underscored the need for researchers to act as problem-solving agents, as research and innovation can solve several challenges that exist in the society.

He emphasized that researchers should be able to work independently, which means determining their own future by making self-strengthening strategies.

Meanwhile, he said, researchers also need to collaborate and synergize with their other counterparts.

"Collaboration means researchers have to learn from people who understand better. With collaboration, it will advance their research," he stated.

In order to work well with others, Handoko counseled researchers to have a thorough understanding of themselves, including their potential, strengths, and limitations.

He believes that self-awareness is a vital tool while collaborating with other researchers.
