Jakarta (ANTARA) - The People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) has urged the government to drive the international community to ramp up pressure on Israel following its assault on a refugee camp in Rafah on Sunday (May 26, 2024).

MPR Speaker Bambang Soesatyo affirmed that higher international pressure is required to push Israel to abide by the order of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to cease its offensive in Rafah, Gaza Strip, and withdraw its troops.

"This is necessary, considering they (Israel) being non-compliant with the order will only put a stain on the dignity of international law," he added in an MPR statement received here on Monday.

Soesatyo asked the Foreign Affairs Ministry to continue to coordinate with the UN Security Council and the international community to press Israel to heed the ICJ's order to end its brutalities in Rafah.

"The MPR would like to ask the Foreign Affairs Ministry to continue applying pressure on Israel, pushing it to immediately obey all necessary steps ordered by the ICJ. The UN Security Council plays a crucial role in overseeing this matter," he stated.

The legislator also affirmed that it is vital that the international community pursue the reopening of entrances to Rafah to enable the safe and unhindered distribution of humanitarian aid.

He then offered condolences over the deaths of dozens of civilians in Sunday's attack.

Earlier, in a post uploaded on its social media account on Sunday, the Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomed the ICJ's order on Israel and urged the oppressive regime to immediately comply with the measures ordered by the court without reservation.

Israeli air strikes on a refugee camp in the southern Gaza city of Rafah on Sunday killed 30 people and injured dozens of others, according to reports from the local media and officials.

The bombardment was carried out not far from a logistics center set up by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in Tal al-Sultan, a local media outlet reported.

In indiscriminate air strikes, the Israeli occupation forces targeted and hit several tents in the refugee camp with heavyweight missiles and bombs, according to the media outlet.
