Papuan people's councils (MRPs) from six provinces in the Papua region expressed their support for the development of Indonesia's new capital city (IKN), Nusantara, in East Kalimantan Province.
The support was stated by representatives of MRPs during a meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
"We would like to state that all MRPs, along with all Papuan traditional communities, are supportive of the development of the IKN," coordinator of MRPs Agustinus Anggaibak remarked in a press conference following the meeting.
He said that MRPs had requested permission from President Jokowi for their involvement in the planned ceremony of Indonesia's 79th Anniversary of Independence Day in Nusantara on August 17.
Anggaibak, also serving as Chairman of Central Papua's MRP, said he viewed the participation of MRPs in the ceremony as vital, considering the councils' status as official institutions.
"Since MRPs were formed officially by the state, it will be natural for us in the councils to take part in the national ceremony. Hence, we have asked Mr. President for an invitation, so we can commemorate Independence Day together in the new capital," he stated.
Earlier, President Jokowi remarked that this year's Independence Day national ceremony would be held at the IKN as well as Jakarta due to the ongoing capital city transition period.
He noted that Nusantara would serve as the sole host for the 2025 Independence Day ceremony after the issuance of a presidential decree on the transfer of the capital city.
"After a presidential decree regarding the capital relocation is issued, the ceremony will be held at the IKN," he remarked on Tuesday (June 11).
According to the plan, President Jokowi will chair the upcoming ceremony at the IKN. Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to accompany the head of state in the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin will be accompanied by Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka while chairing another ceremony at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta.
