Jayapura, Papua (ANTARA) - The South Papua Quarantine Agency informed on Thursday that 319 mangrove crabs from Merauke district, South Papua, were examined via a laboratory test before being exported to Singapore.

The laboratory test, which applied the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing method, revealed that all crabs were free of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV), the agency's head, Cahyono, said.

Therefore, the agency issued a health certificate for the 319 mangrove crabs, allowing Merauke-based exporter UD Maro Abadi to deliver its first export consignment of crabs to Singapore, he added.

The crabs were reportedly flown from Merauke, the capital of South Papua, on a Garuda Indonesia flight on Wednesday, he said.

As reported earlier, Indonesia is striving to increase the exports of fishery products by applying sustainable fishing principles.

In 2023, state-owned sub-holding PT Perikanan Indonesia exported fishery products worth Rp31 billion (US$1.9 million) to several countries, including the United States, Japan, and Singapore.

To accelerate the development of sustainable aquaculture and boost the production of Indonesia's main export commodities, the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has developed area-based modeling for five main commodities.

The five main commodities are shrimp, seaweed, tilapia, crab, and lobster.

The ministry will prepare a crab cultivation modeling program to push up crab exports to US$476 million this year.
