Vice President Ma'ruf Amin on Wednesday issued three directives to all daily administrators of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) during a plenary meeting of the MUI Advisory Council in Jakarta.
First, Amin, who is also serving as the chair of the advisory council, urged the MUI to continue serving the nation while staying true to its manhaj, or doctrine.
"We have a manhaj that guides us in running the organization. The MUI is akin to a train that should not be driven as one pleases, as it is running on a designated track," he said, according to a statement received from his secretariat here.
Second, MUI officials should dedicate all their time to the organization since all works at the MUI are judged directly by God, he added.
"Working at the MUI should not be a part-time job," he emphasized.
Elaborating on his final directive, he called on all MUI administrators to ensure that all programs devised and all steps taken are in line with the council's goal of serving the people and partnering with the government.
On the same occasion, former vice president Jusuf Kalla, who is serving as a member of the MUI Advisory Council, said that the Indonesian people should be grateful for the high level of religious tolerance and freedom they currently enjoy.
He then stressed the importance of the heterogeneous nation continuing to maintain unity to prevent Indonesia from plunging into conflicts, such as those currently plaguing some Muslim-majority countries, including Palestine.
On that note, he called on the MUI to focus on carrying out activities and devising recommendations that will lead to everlasting unity and integrity in Indonesia.
Regarding Palestine, the former vice president observed that communication and mutual recognition between the conflicting parties are of the essence to achieve peace.
"I have met with leaders of Palestinian Hamas and Fatah. They are currently trying to unite. I hope that Indonesia can play a prominent role in facilitating this process," he added.
