"Mr. (President Jokowi) plans to pay his (last) respects at the late former VP's house this afternoon after the Dzuhur prayers," Deputy for Protocol, Press, and Media of the Presidential Secretariat M. Yusuf Permana stated via a text message to journalists here on Wednesday.
Haz passed away on Wednesday morning (July 24) at 9.30 a.m. local time at Tegalan Clinic, Jakarta.
Haz was born on February 15, 1940, in Ketapang, West Kalimantan.
He started his career as a teacher in 1960 before serving as a journalist for a local newspaper "Bebas" in Pontianak. He rose the ranks to become the editor-in-chief of a provincial newspaper called "Pawau" in West Kalimantan.
In addition, Hamzah served as Minister of Investment during the era of President B. J. Habibie.
He was also Deputy Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives and Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare during the era of President Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur).
Hamzah served as Vice President with the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, from 2001 to 2004.
In addition, Hamzah served as General Chairman of the PPP from 1998 to 2007.
