Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani has said that her side and the government will put anticipatory measures against monkeypox (Mpox) in place during the 2nd Indonesia-Africa Forum (IAF) in Bali.

The forum will take place from September 1–3, 2024.

"I heard that the government is anticipating Mpox outbreak. We will synergize for its prevention and anticipation together," she informed in a statement received here on Friday.

As of Thursday, the representatives of at least 54 countries, including eight parliament leaders, have confirmed they will attend the IAF in Bali.

"This is an event organized by the government and the DPR. Of the 54 country (representatives) that will be present, eight of them are House Speakers," Maharani said.

Earlier, in view of the increasing number of Mpox cases in Indonesia, the House Speaker had asked the government to take prompt and effective steps against the viral disease to protect the people.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared Mpox a public emergency of international concern.

"As the Mpox spread increases, the government needs to immediately take effective steps to tackle the spread and ensure maximum protection of the community," she said.

The government must intensify efforts to educate the public about the Mpox outbreak considering that the disease is serious, she added.

Mpox is caused by the same family of viruses that causes smallpox. The disease causes rashes and lesions on the skin.

"There must be massive education considering that this disease can be transmitted through close contact of any kind, including via skin rashes. Education about the transmission, symptoms, and preventive measures must be conveyed widely and clearly," Maharani said.
