Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government will impose a household waste levy on city residents starting January 2025 as part of its efforts to manage waste.

"Soon, every household will be subject to a garbage tariff in accordance with the regional regulation issued on January 1, 2024. This will be implemented from January 1, 2025," said Asep Kuswanto, head of the Jakarta Environment Office, on Tuesday.

He explained that the administration has been preparing for this policy in alignment with Jakarta Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2024 concerning Regional Taxes and Levies.

Under this regulation, the waste disposal service levy will be based on electricity usage. Households using 450 to 900 volt-amps (VA) will be exempt from the levy, while those using 1,300 to 2,200 VA will pay Rp10,000 (approximately $0.70) per month.

The monthly charge for those using 3,500 to 5,500 VA will be Rp30,000, and those using more than 6,600 VA will be charged Rp77,000.

"This policy applies not only to households but also to companies, as commercial areas must also engage in waste processing," Kuswanto noted.

Additionally, the administration plans to reduce the levy for select residents and businesses that demonstrate waste management awareness, such as those actively involved in waste banks.

Through this levy policy, the provincial government aims not to increase the burden on residents but to enhance public awareness about environmental care, Kuswanto emphasized.

Jakarta's garbage problem continues to grow, with daily waste volumes reaching eight thousand tons.
