Beijing, China (ANTARA) - Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Prabowo Subianto upon his inauguration as the 8th President of Indonesia on Sunday.

Prabowo succeeded Joko Widodo to the post. "On October 20, 2024, President Xi Jinping called Prabowo Subianto to congratulate his inauguration as the President of Indonesia," the Chinese Foreign Ministry informed in a written statement issued here on Sunday.

"President Xi Jinping stated that China and Indonesia are traditionally friendly neighbors," it said.

According to the statement, China and Indonesia's strategic comprehensive partnership has grown steadily and entered a new stage toward the development of a community with a common future.

As China and Indonesia prepare to mark the 75th year of diplomatic relations in 2025, the Chinese government expects new cooperation opportunities to emerge.

"I am keen to maintain strategic communication with President Prabowo," President Xi was quoted as saying in the ministry statement.

Prabowo and Gibran Rakabuming Raka were sworn in as the President and Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia for the 2024–2029 term during a plenary session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) at the Parliament Complex on Sunday.

A total of 709 out of 731 MPR members witnessed the inauguration. The plenary session was also attended by national figures, political party leaders, and representatives of friendly countries.

Meanwhile, China was represented by Vice President Han Zheng at the inauguration ceremony. Han, who arrived in Jakarta on Saturday afternoon, also made a state visit to outgoing president Joko Widodo at Merdeka Palace, Jakarta.
