Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - The General Election Commission (KPU) stated that repeat elections will be organized in regions where the none-of-the-above option, locally known as "blank box," prevails over sole candidates in the Regional Head Elections (Pilkada).

On Wednesday (November 27), 545 regions across Indonesia held elections simultaneously, with single-candidate polls taking place in 41 regions.

"If a sole candidate pair in this year's Pilkada failed to obtain 50 percent of the votes, a repeat election would take place in September 2025," KPU commissioner Idham Holik remarked while monitoring vote recapitulation in Pangkalpinang, Bangka Belitung Islands, on Sunday.

He said provisions regarding holding a repeat election are put forward in Article 54d paragraphs 2 and 3 of Law No. 10 of 2016.

Holik also noted that the KPU, Ministry of Home Affairs, and Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) had already agreed on holding of a repeat election next year in the event of a blank box victory.

The agreement is consistent with the Constitutional Court's decision, which stipulates that a repeat election should be held no later than one year following Wednesday's simultaneous elections., he added.

"Of course, we will once again consult with the lawmakers," he pointed out.

The official further remarked that his side would officially announce the detailed schedule and program for the repeat election.

"We would like to stress that we at the KPU are still waiting for the official results of the vote recapitulation being carried out in stages by KPU regional offices in Pangkalpinang City and other regions across Indonesia," he stated.

He said that the stages of next year's repeat election would be similar to those of the 2024 Pilkada, noting that the KPU would open a registration period for those interested in contesting.
