Sukabumi, West Java (ANTARA) - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is building an emergency bridge in response to the damage caused by a flash flood in Sukabumi, West Java, to facilitate aid distribution and evacuation of victims.

In a statement from his office on Friday, the deputy for emergency management of BNPB, Lukmansyah, stated that the emergency bridge is a bailey or portable bridge constructed from a series of steel.

The BNPB recorded that 10 bridges were damaged and will be replaced with bridges, including one in Simpenan Sub-district, due to a flash flood on Wednesday (December 4).

Lukmansyah expressed hope that the bailey bridge can be constructed immediately to facilitate the distribution of logistical aid and equipment required for affected residents.

His side is teaming up with the Indonesian Army to deploy soldiers from the Siliwangi Engineering Battalion and officers from the Sukabumi District Public Works and Public Housing Service to build the infrastructure.

Meanwhile, the Sukabumi District Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported that hydrometeorological disasters, including flash floods, landslides, and extreme weather, hit 33 locations in Sukabumi on December 3-4.

The flash flood disaster, accompanied by landslides, affected hundreds of people, with one fatality due to being buried in a landslide in the Gegerbitung Sub-district, for which search is underway.

The Sukabumi BPBD reported that landslides occurred at 13 locations, floods at nine sites, strong winds at seven spots, and landslides at four locations spread across 22 sub-districts.

Around 103 families, or 243 people, were affected, with 46 families, or 93 people, displaced and seven families, or 19 people, threatened, and one person dead.

Furthermore, the disaster caused significant property damage, with a total of 40 houses affected: 36 houses suffered light damage, three sustained moderate damage, and one was severely destroyed. Additionally, six public facilities were impacted by the incident.

Sukabumi BPBD estimates that material losses due to this disaster amount to approximately Rp695 million (US$42 thousand).
