Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto called on the Developing Eight (D-8) to play a role beyond an economic bloc to ensure the prosperity of all member countries.

He said that D-8 members now represent the Global South's quest for equality, requiring the bloc to focus beyond economics to other development areas.

"We must continue to advocate for a more equitable global order based on international law, inclusiveness, justice, and shared prosperity," he said at the opening session of the 11th D-8 Summit in Egypt's New Administrative Capital in Cairo on Thursday.

He emphasized that unity must be the basis of cooperation among the eight member countries, as the representatives of the Global South.

Prabowo also invited each country to set aside differences to build a strong, unified vision in various fields for the prosperity of the people.

"We must leave our differences behind. We must seek the greater good for our people. Without unity, without integration, we will be weak. And if we are weak, we will be exploited. That is the law of history," he said.

Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening D-8's objectives to support unity.

The 11th D-8 Summit took place in Egypt with the theme of "Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises Shaping Tomorrow's Economy."

Established in 1997, the D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation comprises key countries from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), including Bangladesh, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

The organization aims to improve the position of member countries in the global economy, diversify and create new opportunities in trade relations, increase participation in decision-making at the international level, and improve living standards.
