Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) plans to establish a team tasked with monitoring the handling of a shooting incident targeting Indonesian migrant workers by officers from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM) in Malaysian waters.

"The DPR, through a relevant commission, will form a team to oversee and ensure comprehensive and transparent handling of the bloody incident," DPR Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad noted in a statement cited here on Monday.

He emphasized that the parliament deeply regretted and condemned the alleged excessive use of force by the APMM officers, which led to the death of an undocumented Indonesian migrant worker.

The lawmaker then called on the Ministry of Indonesian Migrant Workers Protection (P2MI) to form a team to investigate the fatal incident in a transparent manner, provide legal assistance to the victims, and facilitate the repatriation of the deceased worker's body.

Dasco also highlighted DPR's plan to summon representatives of the P2MI Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry to discuss the details of the incident and urge them to take diplomatic measures.

"We would like to ask the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia to send a diplomatic note to the Malaysian government regarding the shooting involving five Indonesian migrant workers through the Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur," he remarked.

The incident, which claimed one life and injured four others, occurred in the waters off the coast of Cape Rhu, Malaysia, on Friday (January 24) at 3 a.m. local time. The injured workers have received treatment at various hospitals in Selangor, Malaysia.

In response, P2MI Deputy Minister Christina Aryani, on Sunday (January 26), demanded that the Malaysian government investigate the incident and take firm action against the APMM officers involved.

“The Ministry of P2MI is currently working to identify the victims’ regions of origin to deliver assistance effectively,” she remarked in a press conference in Jakarta.

She affirmed that the P2MI Ministry would also arrange a meeting with Malaysian authorities to discuss preventive measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
