Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Director of ANTARA News Agency Akhmad Munir stated that the Broadcasting Bill, currently under discussion in the House of Representatives (DPR), must prioritize press freedom.

He elaborated that press freedom is mandated by Law No. 40 of 1999 concerning the Press. Hence, the bill must guarantee human rights, particularly freedom of expression.

"To ensure a healthy broadcasting ecosystem that is enlightening, empowering, educative for society, and strengthening national integration," Munir stated at the parliament complex here on Monday.

He emphasized that strengthening national information sovereignty must also be a primary standpoint in the Broadcasting Bill, such as requiring global digital platforms to comply with Indonesian broadcasting laws, especially regarding journalistic content.

He proposed that foreign digital platforms must partner with national media or the state news agency in content distribution to safeguard Indonesia's interests.

The national digital infrastructure for broadcasting should also be boosted to reduce dependence on global platforms.

According to Munir, the role of local media should also be strengthened to ensure the sustainability of the national broadcasting ecosystem.

To achieve this, national broadcasting institutions should be protected by incentives for digitalization and the strengthening of Indonesian journalism.

"(The bill) must require global digital platforms to provide fair compensation to national media and state news agency for the use of content," he stated.

So far, ANTARA has played a strategic role in providing reliable information and news content in text, photo, and audiovisual formats for various media, including broadcasting media, at national and international levels.

According to Munir, print, online, and broadcasting media refer to ANTARA as a news source.
