Jakarta (ANTARA) - The 19th Session of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States (PUIC) Conference will produce a joint resolution to promote peace in Palestine, according to a senior Indonesian member of parliament participating in the event.

"We agreed that we will jointly call on the world to be serious and take concrete action regarding peace in Palestine," Deputy Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP) of the House of Representatives (DPR) Irine Yusiana Roba Putri said on the sidelines of the conference in Jakarta on Tuesday.

She said that the recommendation will not only apply to the parliaments of the member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), but countries across the world.

This is because, she explained, the parliaments of the OIC member states are also members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which is the highest parliamentary forum of world parliaments.

Putri emphasized that support for Palestinian peace and independence has been the main issue voiced at the 19th PUIC Conference by host Indonesia, as directed by DPR Speaker Puan Maharani.

Besides violence against Palestinians, all forms of violence in countries with Muslim populations, including the India-Pakistan conflict and the Rohingya crisis, have also been condemned at the conference, she said.

Earlier, BKSAP chair Mardani Ali Sera announced that the 19th PUIC Conference will result in the Jakarta Declaration.

However, he noted that some parties have proposed calling the joint declaration of the OIC member parliaments the "Senayan Declaration" since the conference is being held at the parliament building in Senayan, Jakarta.

The conference, which is taking place from May 12 to 15, 2025, is themed "Good Governance and Strong Institutions as Pillars of Resilience."

It coincides with the 25th anniversary of the PUIC, which was established in 1999. The event is expected to draw 450 delegates from the parliaments of OIC member states and observer countries.
