Jakarta (ANTARA) - Foreign Minister Sugiono signaled that Indonesia is prepared to serve as a mediator for peace to help end the conflict between India and Pakistan if requested.

"The 1945 Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia mandates us to actively promote world peace," Sugiono noted in a statement in Jakarta on Friday.

He emphasized that any steps taken must align with the Constitution.

“If we are requested to do anything that aims to create global peace, we will actively participate. That’s it,” Sugiono stated in response to a question regarding the possibility of Indonesia acting as a mediator between India and Pakistan.

On the same occasion, Sugiono also expressed Indonesia’s hope that tensions between India and Pakistan would soon de-escalate and that both countries could engage in dialogue to find common ground.

India and Pakistan are currently observing a ceasefire after both sides agreed to temporarily halt all military operations on land, at sea, and in the air, starting from 5:00 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 10.

“We hope the conflict can de-escalate soon, because war, wherever and by whomever, will not bring any benefits,” Sugiono remarked.

He highlighted that President Prabowo Subianto has often encouraged conflicting countries to seek common ground, then cooperate and collaborate, as all of that is also for the well-being of the people in each of those countries.

“So yes, we hope the tensions do not continue,” Sugiono added.

Tensions between India and Pakistan heightened after the Indian military launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting what New Delhi described as "nine terrorist locations" in Pakistan and the Pakistan-administered Kashmir region.

The military operations followed a terrorist attack near Pahalgam, a town in India’s Jammu and Kashmir region, on April 22, for which India held Pakistan responsible.
