Bengkulu (ANTARA) - Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Lieutenant General Suharyanto, relayed President Prabowo Subianto's instruction for maximum post-earthquake recovery efforts in Bengkulu Province.

"The president requested that disaster handling be carried out appropriately to map out the actual problems faced by the community," he noted in a statement on Tuesday.

Suharyanto visited Bengkulu on Monday (May 26), where he reported the earthquake's impact, including 155 damaged houses, 42 of which were severely damaged and had to be demolished.

Although the earthquake caused no fatalities, one person reportedly died of a heart attack unrelated to the disaster.

Suharyanto also praised the preparedness of the local government and all elements involved in the disaster response.

"As the head of BNPB, I appreciate the rapid response from the provincial government, Bengkulu City, as well as support from the military, the police, and other parties who worked together to help the community after the disaster," he remarked.

During the rehabilitation and reconstruction stage, his side has set the amount of assistance at Rp60 million (US$3,500) for severely damaged houses, Rp30 million (US$1,795) for moderate damage, and Rp15 million (US$897) for light damage.

In addition, the provincial and city governments will provide assistance to support the house construction process optimally. The construction to repair severely damaged houses began on Monday.

Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka is also scheduled to visit Bengkulu on Tuesday to inspect the earthquake-affected locations and interact with residents.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Bengkulu on Friday (May 23) at 2:53 local time. The tremors damaged hundreds of residents' homes, especially in the Rafflesia Housing Complex, Betungan, Bengkulu City.
