Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Industry Ministry has said that it is continuing to encourage the development of the specialty chemical industry to support the strengthening of the domestic manufacturing structure and spur national economic growth.

Special chemical products are used in different industrial sectors as auxiliary materials, for example, to process food, animal feed, oil and natural gas, plastic goods, ceramics, paint, and printing ink.

"The specialty chemical industry plays a vital role in various industrial sectors. Moreover, currently, some specialty chemical products are produced domestically," director general of the chemical, pharmaceutical, and textile industry at the ministry, Taufiek Bawazier, said on Tuesday.

He informed that the consumption of specialty chemicals in Indonesia has continued to increase every year. Therefore, the ministry is increasingly taking steps to make the specialty chemical industry more productive, innovative, and competitive.

The effort is also aimed at reducing dependence on the imports of specialty chemicals by making such products with high added value domestically.

"The transformation of the specialty chemical industry not only requires increased production capacity and capability, but also accelerated adoption of technology, environmental sustainability, and integration with the needs of domestic downstream industries and the global market," he said.

The ministry is also committed to creating a conducive business climate for the growth of the specialty chemical industry, including by supporting the provision of fiscal incentives and providing industrial infrastructure and research and development support.

"The Industry Ministry is also actively establishing strategic partnerships with industry players and research institutions to encourage technology transfer and adoption of Industry 4.0, so that the production process in this sector becomes more efficient, environmentally friendly, and competitive," Bawazier informed.

According to the ministry, in the first quarter of 2025, the chemical, pharmaceutical, and traditional medicine industry sectors contributed a significant US$5.35 billion to exports.

With this achievement, the sector group was included in the top five for national industrial export commodities.
