Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto has stated that new and renewable energy sources will be Indonesia's future despite its abundance of oil and gas reserves.

"We have substantial oil and gas reserves and existing technologies allow us to exploit it promptly. Still, renewable energy, especially solar energy, is our future," the president stated on Thursday.

While inaugurating the simultaneous operation of geothermal power plants (PLTP) and solar power plants (PLTS) in 15 provinces, Prabowo highlighted solar power as a new hope for a brighter future for Indonesia.

He noted that new and renewable energy sources will also enable remote islands and villages to generate electricity.

Hence, the president welcomed the operation of some 55 new power plants in 15 provinces as proof that Indonesia can now "stand on our own two feet" in energy matters.

"This energy will be available to all Indonesians efficiently and economically," he stated.

Prabowo also urged his officials to ensure responsible, disciplined, and people-centric energy management while working towards the shared goal of achieving zero carbon emissions.

"We even have the opportunity to be one of the first countries to achieve the zero carbon emission target on time. However, most importantly, we can generate energy efficiently by cutting the expensive logistics," he remarked.

To achieve the goal, the government will collaborate with all like-minded stakeholders, including the private sector, international partners, as well as state- and region-owned enterprises.

He affirmed that the government will also conduct calculations with the private sector and foreign partners to continue the program for national energy self-sufficiency.
