Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir, who accompanied Prabowo to Rio de Janeiro on Sunday local time, informed that the reformation of multilateral values was one of the main themes of the summit held on July 6–7, 2025.
“Multilateral reform, or renewed multilateralism, is an inevitability. It is crucial for developing nations like us, not just to survive, but to thrive. This was conveyed directly by the President,” Nasir said on Sunday local time.
At the same venue, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, said that President Prabowo used the BRICS forum to reaffirm Indonesia’s firm support for multilateralism and justice in global governance.
“President Prabowo also firmly rejected war and double standards. He is also (in agreement) with the view of most participants in urging multilateral reform and representation of the Global South in global governance, especially in institutions such as the United Nations,” he added.
At the summit, President Prabowo was accompanied by Coordinating Minister Hartarto, Deputy Foreign Minister Nasir, Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.
The 17th BRICS Summit was held behind closed doors, though the meeting was opened briefly to the media for remarks by this year’s BRICS chair, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
President Prabowo’s appearance at the BRICS Summit was his first after Indonesia joined the economic bloc as a full member.
During the summit’s opening, President da Silva extended a special welcome to the Indonesian President.
Prabowo was the sixth speaker to address the forum after Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The summit ended with the adoption of the Rio de Janeiro Declaration, which underscored the importance of strengthening multilateralism, promoting equality in global governance, and expressed concern over the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
