Probolinggo, Jawa Timur (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) announced on Tuesday that Indonesia has not only achieved self-sufficiency in chicken meat and eggs, but also recorded surplus production of both commodities.

“Indonesia has achieved self-sufficiency in chicken meat and eggs, achieving surpluses of 0.12 million tons and 0.17 million tons, respectively,” Director General of Livestock and Animal Health at the Ministry of Agriculture Agung Suganda said in Probolinggo, East Java.

The government is making efforts to keep poultry and egg prices stable at the farmer level and ensure they do not fall below the cost of production.

In other commodities, Indonesia still needs to import beef to meet around 52 percent of national demand. Around 79 percent of the national demand for milk is also met through imports.

The Ministry of Agriculture is collaborating with the Indonesian National Police’s food task force to stabilize the prices of live chicken through distribution supervision, absorption of livestock production, and maintaining price controls at the consumer and producer levels.

The ministry is also intensifying efforts to stabilize live chicken prices, aiming to shield smallholder farmers from undue pressure.

Following a national poultry coordination meeting, the ministry and relevant parties have set the live chicken price at Rp18 thousand per kilogram for all harvest weights nationwide, which will be effective June 19, 2025.

The National Food Agency (Bapanas) has urged business owners to consistently uphold the agreed live bird price, ensuring it remains above production costs and contributes to market stability.

The stabilization of live bird prices is expected to align with the Free Nutritious Meals program to ensure optimal absorption of livestock farmers’ produce, equitable distribution, and sustainable improvement in livestock farmers’ welfare across all regions.
