Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) has called for dialogue, including through ASEAN forums, for a peaceful solution to escalating tensions between the armed forces of Thailand and Cambodia along their shared border.

Head of the DPR’s Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Agency (BKSAP), Mardani Ali Sera, urged both countries to exercise restraint and immediately cease hostilities.

“Indonesia believes that there is no issue that cannot be addressed through dialogue. A single peaceful step can save thousands of lives,” he said in a statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday.

The lawmaker emphasized the importance of all Southeast Asian countries upholding the spirit of unity and togetherness within ASEAN as a community that values peace, stability, and regional cooperation.

“We at BKSAP are convinced that open communication and mutual understanding are key to overcoming any obstacle,” Sera affirmed.

Highlighting regional solidarity, the Indonesian legislator suggested utilizing ASEAN forums as platforms for mediation and peaceful engagement to ease tensions between Thailand and Cambodia.

He underlined that Indonesia is ready to support every effort toward a ceasefire and the restoration of mutual trust between neighboring nations.

“The saying ‘one enemy is too many, one thousand friends are too few’ is not just an expression — it serves as a foundation for building a peaceful and united Southeast Asia,” he said.

Thai and Cambodian armed forces exchanged fire in a disputed border area on Thursday, with each side justifying its actions. The clash soon escalated with the firing of artillery and rockets.

Thai Public Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin claimed that Cambodian attacks have wounded 35 civilians and eight soldiers, according to the Thai News Agency.

He added that 11 civilians and one soldier have been killed in the attacks, which he dubbed as a “serious violation of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions.”

Meanwhile, the Cambodian Press Agency quoted Prime Minister Hun Manet as saying that Cambodian forces are working to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

He blamed Thailand for the conflict, saying it was triggered by Thai army attacks on Cambodian military positions in Oddar Meanchey province on Thursday morning.
