Biak, Papua (ANTARA) - The Biak Numfor district government in Papua celebrated Indonesia's 80th Independence Day on Sunday by raising the national flags both on land and underwater around Bromsi Island, Aimando Subdistrict.

The main land ceremony was led by Biak Numfor District Head Markus Mansnembra, while the underwater flag-raising was conducted by Air Force Operations Commander III, Air Vice Marshal Azhar Aditama Djojosugito.

The dual ceremonies drew large crowds, with over a thousand residents from Bromsi, Pasi, and Padaido Islands joining the celebration.

"This is the first time in our eighty-year history that the regional government has held such a ceremony here," Mansnembra said, thanking local communities for their strong support.

Dozens of traditional motorboats, powered by Johnson engines, welcomed guests arriving for the ceremony in a festive display of local culture.

Acting regional secretary ZL Mailoa said preparations for the Independence Day reception went smoothly, with participants remaining enthusiastic despite the hot weather.

Following the flag-raising, celebrations continued with a Johnson boat race featuring 12 finalists and a sea swimming competition in Bromsi waters.

Meanwhile, in Jakarta, President Prabowo Subianto led the Proclamation Ceremony at the Merdeka Palace, which included the reading of the Proclamation Text, a flag parade, the People's Festival, and the Independence Unity Carnival.

This year's Independence Day theme, "United and Sovereign, A Prosperous People, An Advanced Indonesia," underscores national unity as a foundation for future development.
