Batam, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s State Logistics Agency Bulog is expanding the distribution of its Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) rice to remote islands in Riau Islands Province to ensure access beyond urban centers.

Guido XL Pereira, head of Bulog Batam, said distribution efforts in Karimun District are being stepped up to meet rising demand.

“Average daily sales in Karimun now reach 10 tons. We’re regularly delivering to smaller islands. Today, we’re sending shipments to Kundur and Belat Islands,” Pereira said on Saturday.

Bulog operates warehouses in both Batam City and Karimun District. As of Friday, September 5, SPHP rice sales in Karimun totaled 52.8 tons, toward a monthly target of 594.6 tons.

“In August, combined SPHP sales in Batam and Karimun reached 224.9 tons, with Karimun contributing around 200 tons,” Pereira said.

On Saturday, Bulog delivered 10 tons of rice to three distribution points on Kundur and Belat islands. The rice is sold at Rp58,000 per 5-kilogram sack, a price point aimed at maintaining affordability.

“We’re running a low-cost food initiative and reaching out to remote villages like Tebias on Belat Island. It’s part of our commitment to ensure island communities benefit from SPHP,” he said.

Pereira added that food prices, including rice, remain stable in both Batam and Karimun.

“This is not just about supply. It’s about maintaining people’s purchasing power,” he said.

The SPHP program, managed by Bulog nationwide, aims to stabilize food prices and improve access to essential goods, especially in underserved areas.
